Munich – 8th to 10th

I’ve been told, Ernest Hemingway said this about Munich…

Don’t even go anywhere else, I’m telling you, there’s nothing like Munich. Everything else in Germany is a waste of time.

And he might have been spot on there. It’s without doubt the most quintessentially German place I’ve ever been. People wait for the green man (if you know you know), everyone drinks beer all day, and every street is littered with traditional German architecture (including the little model people in the towers etc).

Although I didn’t consider Germany to be particularly religious, I must be wrong as Munich was overflowing with some of the most stunning churches I’ve ever seen. All, of course, kitted out with equally illustrious organs. Photos below.

Although, my dear readers, if you think you like the sound of Munich (and there isn’t much not to like) I would suggest going in Spring or, even better, Summer. At the moment the days start at around -6° and only reach a measly 1° or 2° by early afternoon. But donning nearly all of my clothes I safely made it downstairs to the hostel bar to warm up.

Where, as it happens, I met my first travel friend, an Aussie called Tom who was also heading East. We talked absolute bollocks mostly about Australian politics, which I’m sure was very informative; unfortunately my memory went patchy after the third happy hour beer.

The Augustiner Lagerbier Hells we were drinking came from the Munich brewery dating back to 1328. Incredibly delicious, but horrific on the hangover – in my limited experience.

WIth everything to see in Munich seen, the next stop is Croatia via a 12hr night Flixbus. At €30 euros a ticket, what could possibly go wrong…
